Karl R. Schreiner rescued Brandon L. Spradley from a dog attack, Indianapolis, Indiana, October 3, 1988. While waiting for a school bus at a residential intersection, Brandon, 6, was attacked by two adult pit bull terriers, who dragged him into the street and mauled him. Alerted in his nearby residence, Schreiner, 75, retired maintenance engineer, grabbed a wooden club and ran into the street, where he started to beat the dogs away. The dogs turned from Brandon and lunged at Schreiner, who kept clubbing them until they desisted and left the scene. The dogs were destroyed a short time later when they menaced an arriving policeman. Brandon required hospitalization for severe bite wounds to his face, head, and extremities.
