Kathryn E. Richardson, 38, school teacher, saved George W. Herrmann, 7, from drowning New York, New York, February 6, 1924. George broke through thin ice on the Bronx River 22 feet from the bank, where the water was 10 feet deep. Miss Richardson started toward him from the bank but broke through within six feet of him. Then she broke the ice to George, had him take hold of her, and supported him. The ice at the edge of the hole snapped off several times as she took hold of it. She moved four feet toward the bank, swimming and holding to the ice, but was unable to progress farther. In response to her cries for help, a board was pushed over the ice to her, and she rested her arm on it until a boat was brought by two men. She and George were then taken to the bank. 24092-1911
