Kathryn T. Fitzgerald attempted to save Doris M. Miller from drowning, Wildwood, New Jersey, July 27, 1939. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Doris, 9, became distressed and drifted to water nine feet deep 500 feet from shore. Miss Fitzgerald, 21, stenographer, waded and then swam 265 feet to Doris, who threw her arms and legs around Miss Fitzgerald. They were submerged briefly; and Miss Fitzgerald freed herself from Doris, who was dazed. Treading water, Miss Fitzgerald repeatedly raised Doris’s head above the surface. She then swam 10 feet towing Doris and calling for help. Her strength gave out; and she became semiconscious, moaning and holding to Doris. Life-guards then rescued Miss Fitzgerald and Doris, who was semiconscious. They were revived. 37912-3149
