Kelly Mark Sullivan helped to save Jim B. Kollath from drowning, Duluth, Minnesota, August 15, 1993. After attempting the rescue of a youth, Kollath, 23, was caught in turbulent water in a narrow section of Miller Creek lined by steep, rock walls. Drops in the creek’s bed and runoff from heavy rain, swelling the stream, created a swift current. Sullivan, 36, disabled nurse’s aide, was among those alerted to the situation. After ascertaining that Kollath was tiring in his efforts to maintain his position in the turbulent water, Sullivan partially descended a wall of the creek, then entered the water. He grasped Kollath and, with difficulty, secured him to a wall of the creek for several minutes. Firefighters arrived and lowered a rope to them; Sullivan tied the rope to Kollath, who was then pulled from the creek. Sullivan was then pulled from the creek by firefighters. Kollath required hospital treatment for injuries, and Sullivan sustained cuts and bruises, from which he recovered.
