Kennard N. Dudgeon saved William H. J. Jahns from burning, Hanna, Indiana, August 31, 1924. Jahns, 40, farmer, was in a barn when it was struck by lightning and began to burn. He was rendered unconscious by the shock. Kennard, 15, farmhand, ran to the barn and to the middle of the ground floor and thought he heard groans in the mow on the second floor, which contained six tons of hay. He climbed a ladder to the mow and searched for Jahns, although the fire was burning rapidly in the hay. The flames cut off his retreat to the ladder, and he ran to a door in the side of the barn and jumped eight feet to the ground. He then entered another door and found Jahns, who was a few feet from the door lying on straw just beginning to burn. Above them was a mass of flames which spurted out of the top of the door through which Kennard dragged Jahns and 25 feet away from the barn. Two or three minutes later the barn collapsed. Kennard was not injured, but the skin peeled off his face and hands a few days later. 24614-2007
