Kenneth A. Ayre attempted to save Minnie L. Houchin from drowning, Galena, Missouri, March 28, 1928. While riding in a rowboat on the James River, Minnie, 17, was thrown into deep water 20 feet from the bank when the boat struck the overhanging branches of a tree. She was carried farther from the branches by a strong current. Kenneth, 16, schoolboy, who was fully clothed and was winded by a long run, swam 15 feet from the bank to her and then tried to swim with her toward the bank. He was unable to make progress against the current and became weakened, cramped, and dazed. He lost his hold of Minnie. Soon afterward he was rescued by a youth, who swam to him from the bank. Minnie was drowned. 29328-2347
