Kenneth C. Berfelz helped to rescue Roy W. Davis from being struck by a runaway automobile, Listowel, Ontario, November 16, 1990. In the parking lot of a store, Davis, 43, was knocked down by a runaway automobile when he attempted to stop it. Traveling backward in circles, the car struck him repeatedly and also threatened a small girl who lay nearby. Berfelz, 24, apprentice millwright, saw the accident and immediately ran to the scene. He entered the car partially through its open passenger door but was thrown to the pavement. Regaining his footing, Berfelz again entered the moving car; he went to the driver’s seat, where he disengaged the car’s gears and applied its brakes, stopping the car as another man approached and dragged Davis from its path. Davis required extensive hospitalization for severe injuries. Berfelz sustained lacerations to his back and wrist; he recovered.
