Kenneth D. MacArthur saved Collette M. Ryan and Thomas M. Ryan, and attempted to save Edwin B. Gray from drowning, Sausalito, California, February 2, 1964. At night, a small sports car containing the Ryans, Gray, and two other persons plunged down a bank to the top of a seawall, flipped over into San Francisco Bay, and sank upside down in water eight feet deep. A woman and a man got out and swam to the wall, where their calls for help attracted several persons, including MacArthur, 30, personal manager of entertainers. After they had been aided out of the water by MacArthur, the woman said her husband still was in the submerged automobile, which had one headlight burning. MacArthur removed only his sweater, entered the cold water, and swam to 15 feet from the wall. He made two surface dives to the bottom alongside the convertible but could find no opening. On the third dive he grasped an object believed to have been a window and pulled it free after much effort. His lungs pained him intensely, and he surfaced for air. Submerging again, he reached through the opening, grasped Mrs. Ryan, 31, and with much difficulty pulled her from the automobile. With his lungs paining him, he took her to the surface and towed her to the others at the wall. MacArthur swam back to the automobile, submerged, and again reached through the opening. He grasped Ryan, 33, attorney, pulled him from the automobile, and towed him to the wall. Others took Ryan from MacArthur, who was breathing heavily as he climbed out. Learning that another man still was in the sunken automobile, MacArthur re-entered the water and returned to the car, the headlight by that time having gone out. Another man entered the water and swam to the other side of the automobile. Each submerged, but the other man was unable to find an opening and returned to the surface. MacArthur reached through the opening, obtained a hold on Gray, 33, Department of Labor claims chief, and drew him from the automobile. Fatigued and badly chilled, MacArthur towed Gray to the wall as the other man followed. The Ryans recovered. Gray could not be revived.
