Kenneth Franklin Smith saved Keith E. Rollins and helped to save Paul G. Titmuss from burning, Williamston, Michigan, January 30, 1979. When their police patrol car veered from the highway at night and crashed into a tree, Rollins and Titmuss were severely injured and unable to get out of the vehicle, on which flames appeared at the front end. Smith, 30, truckdriver, made his way through deep snow surrounding the patrol car and removed Rollins through a broken window. Another truckdriver arrived; and he and Smith then pulled Titmuss through the window opening into the snow, which made it difficult to move the injured men away from the burning vehicle. Ammunition in the patrol car began exploding. The vehicle was totally afire by the time the men had reached the highway. Rollins and Titmuss had not sustained any burns, but they were hospitalized for injuries suffered in the accident.
