Kenneth R. Falls rescued James D. Haney from burning, Bessemer City, North Carolina, September 5, 1988. Maney, 35, was in his house when fire broke out at night. Falls, 31, power company lineman, was driving by when he saw the fire. After he stopped at the scene and learned that Maney was still inside the house, Falls entered through the front door but was forced out by dense smoke. He re-entered the house by crawling and, despite intense heat and limited visibility inside, located Maney in the living room. He grasped Maney and dragged him out. Both Falls and Maney sustained minor burns, from which they recovered.
