Kenneth R. Vandegrift helped to save LeRoy Farrar from burning, Saticoy, California, December 9, 1987. Farrar, 59, was trapped in his car after a highway accident in which flames broke out and virtually surrounded the car. Vandegrift, 40, construction superintendent, who was driving nearby, stopped and approached the burning car. After a police officer made a path through the flames with his fire extinguisher and broke a side window of the car, Vandegrift and the officer pulled Farrar out of the car through the window. Vandegrift helped Farrar away from the car just before it was engulfed by flames. Farrar required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries. Vandegrift sustained a minor burn on his face, and he recovered.
