Kevin Conley attempted to rescue a woman from assault, Wilmington, Delaware, June 12, 1990. As they were walking down a street at night, a 31-year-old woman and her two male companions were assaulted by members of a large group of unruly youths, some of whom began to molest the woman. Walking nearby, Conley, 19, technical school student, witnessed the assault and ran into the mob to go to the woman’s defense. Members of the mob then turned on him and beat him. Police arrived and dispersed the mob. The woman sustained minor injury, but Conley required hospital treatment, and subsequently surgery, for fractured facial bones and swelling of his right eye.
