Kevin J. Pospichal helped to rescue Sheila R. Williams from burning, Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, February 28, 1992. Mrs. Williams, 35, was unconscious in the front passenger seat of a car that broke into flames during a highway accident. From his vehicle nearby, Pospichal, 28, route salesman, witnessed the accident. He immediately ran to the passenger side of the burning car and attempted to gain entry through a broken window but was driven back by flames and blistering heat. Pospichal then ran to the driver’s side of the car, where Mrs. Williams’s husband had partially removed her through the front door. Pospichal reached into the car, grasped Mrs. Williams’s legs, and, together with her husband, pulled Mrs. Williams, who was aflame, from the car. The car was shortly engulfed in flames. Mrs. Williams and Pospichal both required hospital treatment for burns, Pospichal sustaining first- and second-degree burns to his face. He recovered.
