Kevin John Ging helped to save Paul E. Knox from a possible explosion, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 10, 1986. Knox, 28, unconscious, lay buried by rubble in the basement of the residential school where he taught after an explosion of leaking natural gas. As gas continued to leak into the basement, Ging, 26, physical therapy aid, and another man entered to search for a resident they believed was there. When the other man discovered Knox, he and Ging cleared the debris from him, then carried him out of the basement to safety. Knox required extensive hospitalization for a serious head injury. Ging was treated for smoke inhalation, and he recovered.
