Kevin L. J. Schuster died after helping to save Larry R. Croft from drowning, Melba, Idaho, August 4, 1991. Croft, 40, was fishing from a rock in the Snake River when he slipped into the water and was carried away by a very swift current. Downstream, Schuster, 29, store manager, and his girlfriend were fishing near the bank when Croft approached. Schuster immediately swam to Croft and grasped him, then took him back toward the bank. As Schuster’s girlfriend then entered the river to take Croft the remaining distance to safety, Schuster was swept farther downstream. Despite efforts by his girlfriend and her brother to save him, Schuster was carried away by the current. His body was found three days later. Croft recovered from exhaustion and minor injury.
