Kevin William Ballman saved Alice M. Schwartz from an impending explosion, Cincinnati, Ohio, April 23, 1980. Ballman, 22, security guard, noticed that an electrical transformer beneath a sidewalk grating was overheating. Fearing an explosion, he was about to call authorities when he saw Mrs. Schwartz, 62, walk onto the grating. Ballman ran to Mrs. Schwartz on the grating, through which huge flames then rose from the transformer. Ballman pushed Mrs. Schwartz clear of the grating; but an explosion then threw Ballman some distance. Mrs. Schwartz’s burns were minor; Ballman’s were extensive but he recovered. 57236-6477
