Kristy M. Schellsmidt rescued Dean M. and helped to rescue Donald D. Bernhard from burning, Harpers Ferry, Iowa, August 29, 1990. Dean, 51, was the driver of a pickup truck that caught fire in a highway accident, and his brother Donald, 44, was his passenger. One of the first to arrive at the scene, Miss Schellsmidt, 24, vendor, found Dean and Donald semi- conscious in the pickup, the engine area and dash of which were aflame. She opened the driver’s door, grasped Dean around the chest, and pulled him out of and away from the pickup. She then returned to it, partially entered, and grasped Donald. With difficulty, she pulled Donald to the door, where she received help in removing him from the pickup. Miss Schellsmidt and others then dragged the men to a nearby ditch, during which time an explosion occurred at the pickup and engulfed it in flames. Both Dean and Donald were hospitalized for treatment of burns and extensive injuries. Miss Schellsmidt recovered from shock.
