Kyle M. Sperling saved Lisa K. Hill and helped to save Robert L. Wiedrick from drowning, Carlsbad, California, March 13, 1983. While Lisa, 12, and a friend were playing in the surf of the Pacific Ocean, they were drawn into the strong current and turbulence created by effluent from a nearby power plant. Sperling, 21, landscaper, stripped to his jeans and went to the end of one of the jetties channeling the effluent as Lisa and her friend were carried into deep, turbulent water. When rescue efforts by Wiedrick, 52, and another man failed, Sperling dived in, swam to Lisa, and returned with her to the jetty. Meanwhile, Wiedrick had re-entered the water for Lisa’s friend, but he was carried out to deep water, where he foundered. Sperling re-entered the water and swam to Wiedrick, whom he supported until a man with a surfboard arrived and helped them to shore.
