L. Herman Brady saved Annie L. Bond and Margaret L Mearns from drowning, Bay City, Texas, July 19, 1915. Annie, 15, and Margaret, 14, while wading in a branch of the Colorado River, stepped into deep water and became helpless 20 feet from the bank, where the water was about 10 feet deep. Herman, 17, schoolboy, swam 10 feet to Annie, and she grasped him around the neck and pulled him under the surface twice. He broke her hold, rose to the surface, and swam and pushed her 10 feet to wadable water. She continued to struggle all the time. Herman then swam 30 feet to Margaret, who had drifted downstream and was under the surface. He raised her to the surface, and she got across his back and held his shoulder. He swam 19 feet with her to a tree stump, four feet from the bank. They were then assisted to the bank by a man, who extended a pole to Herman. Herman and the girls were not injured. 17525-1415
