L. Irene Sornberger, 20, saved Aline M. Austin, 28, from drowning, East Windsor, New York, July 23, 1913. The young women were wading in the Susquehanna River, and Miss Austin got into deep water 20 feet from the nearest bank. Neither of them could swim, and Miss Austin was an invalid. Miss Austin went beneath the surface, and Miss Sornberger, who knew that there were deep places in the vicinity, waded toward her until she too got into deep water. She went beneath the surface, but she struggled forward until she grasped Miss Austin. They came to the surface together, and Miss Sornberger tried to keep Miss Austin’s head at the surface. They went down twice more, and then a man and woman in a boat reached them. The man grasped Miss Sornberger’s arm and pulled her to the surface. She was holding Miss Austin, who was then unconscious. They were taken to land. Miss Sornberger became unconscious when she reached land, but revived in a few minutes. Miss Austin was revived. 12335-1021
