L. Mae Olger, 18, student, saved Charles F. Barnes, 40, farmer and veterinarian, from an enraged bull, Pleasant Valley, Michigan, December 16, 1927. Barnes was attacked by a bull in a stable but slipped out of a door into a barnyard. The bull followed him, knocked him down, and tried to get upon him with its knees. He was injured and called for help. Miss Olger had had little experience with cattle and knew the bull was cross. Although she was much frightened, she went into the barnyard with a pitchfork and jabbed the bull with the fork two or three times. The bull jumped back, and Barnes then got to his feet. Barnes took the fork from Miss Olger and hit the bull two or three times on the head. Meanwhile, Miss Olger got out of the barnyard. Barnes backed to a gate, the bull following and bellowing, and got out of the barnyard. Barnes suffered from eight broken ribs. 27901-2254
