L. Wayne Brown rescued Arthur A. Boettcher, Jr., from burning, Davenport, Nebraska, August 21, 1978. Boettcher, 32, and Brown, 58, merchant, were in an attic, removing cork insulation, when a flash fire occurred. Both men sustained burns. Brown left but, noting that Boettcher had not followed, re-entered the burning attic. Despite the dense smoke, Brown found Boettcher, who was unconscious, and dragged him to the attic’s only opening, from which a ladder extended to the ground. Brown pulled Boettcher out of the attic and, with aid, took him down the ladder. Both men had suffered extensive burns, Brown being permanently disabled. 56954-6454
