Lafayette L. Davis, 32, blacksmith, saved Alonzo M. Barnett, 18, farmhand, from suffocation, Bangs, Texas, May 14, 1907. Barnett had been overcome at the bottom of a 25-foot well by powder smoke and carbon dioxide. After others had refused to descend, Davis placed his leg in a noose in the well rope and had himself lowered into the well. He tied the rope around Barnett, and he was raised to the surface, after which the rope was lowered to Davis, and he was drawn up. Barnett was revived. 5482-686
