Lannie Simmons died attempting to save Marvin T. Weaver and others from burning, South Ozone Park, New York, November 22, 1991. Weaver, 67, and four of his grandchildren were on the second floor of the family’s house when fire erupted in an enclosed first-floor porch. Another of the grandchildren, Lannie, 12, student, was on the first floor with other family members when the fire was discovered. Those on the first floor escaped to safety, but Lannie re-entered the house and was next seen on the roof of the front porch, outside a window to one of the second-floor bedrooms. When Lannie shouted that he could not rouse his grandfather or the children, those outside the house told him not to go back inside. Lannie re-entered through the window. Firefighters who arrived shortly found Lannie, his grandfather, and the four children in second-floor bedrooms; all had died from effects of the fire.
