Larry B. Pulai saved a girl from being struck by a train, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, May 20, 1987. A 20-month-old girl stood between the rails of a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching at about 15 m.p.h. Pulai, 26, head end trainman, was in the lead locomotive and saw the girl when the train was about 500 feet from her. He immediately left the locomotive, jumped to the ground, and ran alongside the train as it began to slow. After surpassing the train, Pulai veered in front of it and, without stopping, grabbed the girl and ran off the track, clutching her. Within seconds the front of the train passed them.
