Larry E. Eddleman died attempting to save Charles S. Kelly from drowning, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, April 25, 1977. When his canoe capsized in turbulent water at the base of a dam in the Stone River, Kelly, 22, was caught by the strong undertow in the turbulence and intermittently submerged in the cold water. Eddleman, 22, college student, and a young woman paddled another canoe to within a few feet of Kelly, who again went under. The canoe capsized; and the young woman reached safety, but Eddleman swam to where Kelly had returned to the surface in the turbulent area. Eddleman and Kelly were seen bobbing together in the rough water. Kelly then went under again and returned to the surface beyond the turbulent area where, floating face down, he was carried away from the dam by the current. The same thing then happened with Eddleman. Others removed them from the water, but both were dead.
