Larry G. Zimmerman helped to rescue Ricky L. Glass from burning, Hopeful, Georgia, February 2, 1991. Glass, 35, was asleep when fire erupted inside his mobile home before dawn and spread. A neighbor, Zimmerman, 35, masonry superintendent, was alerted and went to the scene, where he dislodged an air conditioner from a window in one of the rooms of the mobile home that was not then aflame. Despite intense heat in the mobile home and dense smoke, which precluded visibility, Zimmerman crawled through the window in search of Glass. He located Glass in the room he had entered and dragged him to the window, but, as Glass outweighed him, he was unable to lift him to the window. Exiting himself, Zimmerman obtained a rope; he reached through the window and tied it around Glass. Zimmerman and another neighbor who had arrived then pulled Glass from the mobile home and lowered him to the ground. Glass was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns and smoke inhalation; he recovered. Zimmerman was blistered on his arms and legs, and he too recovered.
