Larry R. Stanton, Sr., helped to save Ian D. Mills from drowning, Fountain, Michigan, July 23, 1990. Floundering in deep water of Round Lake about 45 feet from the bank, Ian, 8, called for help. A resident of the area who was nearby, Stanton, 50, disabled by limited use of his arms, waded and paddled to him. Ian climbed onto Stanton’s chest, and Stanton kicked and paddled, with difficulty, toward the bank. Tiring, Stanton submerged. Ian’s aunt swam to them, grasped Ian, and towed him to safety. Stanton made his way back to the bank without assistance and recovered after resting.
