Laura J. Darrow, 16, factory hand, attempted to save Bertha I. Brown, 17, from drowning, Flemington, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1920. While wading in Bald Eagle Creek, Bertha got into deep water and lost self control. She sank slightly and was carried farther from the bank by the current. Laura waded from the bank and swam 11 feet to Bertha. She took hold of the back of Bertha’s bathing suit, but Bertha immediately grasped Laura at the neck or shoulder, and both sank. They rose, and Laura asked Bertha to loosen her hold, but Bertha continued to hold Laura tightly. They sank and rose again, and Laura made an unsuccessful attempt to free herself. Laura made no progress toward the bank but kept at the surface holding to Bertha and Bertha to her until a young man swam to them and rescued Laura. Bertha was rescued later by another young man. 20620-1660
