Lawrence J. Paulson died attempting to save Dorothe J. Wilson from drowning, Cartwright, North Dakota, August 16, 1931. While wading in the Yellowstone River, Dorothe, 14, who could not swim, stepped in water 10 feet deep in a channel 50 feet wide between two sandbars. Paulson’s brother, who did not know the water was beyond his depth, hurried to aid her, and she clasped him around the neck. Paulson, 18, farmer, swam 40 feet toward them, and when he was close to them, his brother broke her hold and swam to wadable water. Paulson took hold of her, but she immediately clasped him around the neck and climbed upon him, forcing him under the surface. She remained at the surface, drifting 100 feet in the current, and then was rescued by a girl, who swam to her and took her a few feet to wadable water. Dorothe was unconscious but was revived. Paulson did not reappear and was drowned. 31637-2659
