Lawrence L. Downs, 12, schoolboy, attempted to save Elwood W. Agnew, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Wilmington, Delaware, January 23, 1921. Elwood broke through thin ice on a pond about 70 feet from the bank and was unable to climb out. Lawrence, who had regarded the ice as unsafe and had kept off it, removed his outer clothing and walked quickly over the ice toward Elwood but broke through 10 feet from him. Lawrence was submerged to his neck and broke ice at the edge of the hole in attempts to climb out. After one man had broken through the ice in an attempt to aid the boys, another man, who was tall, breaking the ice with his arms, waded to the boys through neck-deep water, took hold of Elwood in one arm and Lawrence in the other, and waded to within 10 feet of the bank with them, at which point he was assisted by another man. Both boys suffered severely from exposure. 21101-1875
