Lawrence P. Hill attempted to save John W. Davis, Jr., from drowning, Galveston, Texas, June 28, 1935. While swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, John, 11, was unable to make headway toward shore, called for help, and drifted to a point 650 feet from shore. He trod water and threshed to keep at the surface. There was an off-shore undercurrent, and waves were two feet high. Hill, 45, painter, who wore hip-length rubber boots, waded and then swam 150 feet to within 100 feet of John but was unable to make farther progress because of the weight of water in his boots. He then trod water as he bobbed up and down. Charles B. Stansfield, Jr., removed his clothing except trunks and waded and swam to Hill, who then was 600 feet from shore. He got behind Hill and swam and pushed him to wadable water, and then aided him to wade. At a point close to shore Hill collapsed, and he was carried out of the water. While another man worked over Hill, Stansfield rescued John. Hill was revived.
