Lawrence R. Koth saved Charles McCloskey from drowning, Austin, Pennsylvania, January 30, 1926. While Charles, 11, schoolboy, was skating on a pond, he broke through thin ice and fell into water nine feet deep. Lawrence, 16, schoolboy, who was heavily clothed, slid on firm ice to the thin ice, and, expecting to break through the ice, he lay prone and crawled toward Charles, who was 20 feet from him. Lawrence broke through when he was close to Charles and went under water. Lawrence trod water and caught hold of Charles, and Charles took hold of Lawrence’s shoulders momentarily. Lawrence then got behind Charles, and, by lifting and pushing him a number of times, he broke thin ice for 12 feet to firm ice. Charles and Lawrence were then helped upon the firm ice. 27014-2185
