Lawrence W. Richeal, 17, truck driver, died attempting to save Kenneth C. Reed, 15, schoolboy, from drowning, Eastvale, Pennsylvania, December 18, 1943. Kenneth broke through weak ice on the Beaver River into water 22 feet deep 240 feet from the bank. From firm ice Lawrence skated to a point eight feet from the edge of the hole, dropped to his knees, and leaning forward, extended a hockey-stick toward Kenneth. The ice broke under Lawrence, and he and Kenneth were submerged. Kenneth did not reappear and was drowned. Lawrence rose and tried to climb onto the ice; but the edge broke under his grasp, the hole becoming 10 feet in diameter. Lawrence then rested his elbows on the ice. A boy rolled a keg toward Lawrence, and men pushed a railroad-tie toward him. Neither object reached Lawrence. He lost his hold and was drowned. 40089-3371
