Lecil S. Shockley, 48, foreman of linemen, died attempting to save Allie K. Hardesty, 16, from drowning, Lawrenceport, Indiana, July 4, 1927. While Allie was wading in the White River, she stepped into a channel of deep water. She tried to swim but drifted in the current farther from wadable water. Allie’s brother tried to aid her but called for help. Shockley, who was much lighter than Allie, swam 80 feet and reached her after her brother, who was fatigued, had left her. Allie grasped Shockley around the neck with both arms, and they sank. Both were drowned.
