Lecile G. Neves saved Alice Sue Graham from drowning, Graham, Texas, March 30, 1947. While fishing from the bank of Salt Creek, Alice Sue, 8, fell into water seven feet deep and struggling moved out 12 feet. Her 10-year-old sister and Lecile ran to the bank. Lecile, 11, schoolboy, who was a fair swimmer, knew neither sister could swim. Removing his clothing, he swam to Alice Sue. Treading water, he attempted for a minute to take hold of her, but she kicked and threshed frantically, striking him and being twice submerged. He then grasped her wrist, swam 10 feet towing her, and tried to get a foothold in the bank, which rose vertically 30 inches above the water. Becoming very short of breath, he released his hold of Alice Sue and started to climb the bank to rest, but her sister, greatly upset, pushed him back into the water. He then climbed the bank, extended a fish-pole to Alice Sue, and pulled her to the bank, onto which she was aided by him and her sister. 41010-3550
