Lee A. Davenport, 26, janitor, saved Margaret J. Pryor, 27, from drowning, Detroit, Michigan, February 18, 1947. Mrs. Pryor broke through ice on the Detroit River into water 15 feet deep 15 feet from the bank. Davenport ran 250 feet to a fence 12 feet high, climbed it, and jumped to the ground. Lying prone on the ice, he pulled himself to the edge of the hole and tried to pull Mrs. Pryor from the water. The ice broke under him, and both were briefly submerged. Holding her at arm’s length, he broke a hold which she took and supporting her swam six feet to the edge of the ice, which she grasped. He got out of the water, lay prone on the ice, and helped her upon it. Holding her clothing, Davenport crawled on his knees and dragged her nine feet to the bank, where they rose to their feet. Mrs. Pryor was chilled and suffered from shock but recovered. Davenport was chilled and suffered a cold for two days. 40980-3517
