Lee B. Schiff saved Jacquelyn L. Neuman and Virginia M. Moline from drowning, Decatur, Michigan, August 11, 1944. While playing with Mrs. Moline’s five-year-old daughter in wadable water in Lake of the Woods, Miss Neuman, 15, slipped into water 15 feet deep. Both were twice submerged and then rose separated. Mrs. Moline, 40, waded and lunged into the deep water to rescue her daughter, failed to reach her, and grasped Miss Neuman. From the bank Lee, 11, schoolboy, waded and swam 30 feet to Miss Neuman, who had become separated from Mrs. Moline; and she clasped her arms around his neck, both being submerged. Lee freed himself and upon rising, took hold of her and swam eight feet to wadable water. He then swam to Mrs. Moline who grasped him momentarily; and they were submerged. Swimming to the surface within four feet of Miss Neuman, Lee took hold of her extended hand; and treading water, he extended his other hand to Mrs. Moline, who took hold of it. They then were pulled to wadable water. Mrs. Moline’s daugher was drowned. 40277-3398
