Leo A. Gorman, 26, clerk, attempted to save Frederick W. Ryan, 28 clerk, from drowning, Prospect, New York, June 18, 1919. Ryan slid from the bank of West Canada Creek over a narrow submerged ledge of rock into deep water. He began threshing and called for help. Gorman, who was dressed, got on his knee at the water’s edge, put one foot in the water on the ledge, leaned forward, and took hold of Ryan’s hand. He then slid over the ledge into deep water. He swam to the ledge, holding to Ryan, and endeavored to climb on it but slipped back and called for help. Gorman again swam five feet to the ledge, still holding to Ryan. He grasped the leg of a man who had stepped to the water’s edge and pulled him into the water. Gorman then became separated from Ryan, and he and the other man swam close to the ledge and were pulled out on the bank. Ryan drowned. 19690-1535
