Leon Hassell Brewer, 24, student, died attempting to save C. Alfred Rose, 20, farmer, from drowning, Waco, Texas, September 6, 1920. While swimming across the Brazos River, Rose encountered a strong current and could make no progress 35 feet from the bank. Brewer waded 10 feet and swam 20 feet toward Rose, but he was then carried by the current away from Rose. He swam hard but was carried 125 feet from the bank and about 50 feet from Rose. Brewer then sank and was drowned. Rose was rescued by his father, who swam to him from the bank. 20851-1696
