Leon Lewis Stombaugh, 37, locomotive repairer, saved Vasile Lazar, 50, laborer, from drowning, Lowellville, Ohio, January 18, 1935. While walking on a girder of a bridge over the Mahoning River, Lazar fell into water 10 feet deep and drifted in a current of 1.5 m.p.h. Stombaugh, who was a poor swimmer and was almost fully clothed, waded from the bank and then swam 100 feet to Lazar. Towing Lazar, who was limp, he turned and swam 125 feet and then got hold of a branch that was extended to him by men near the bank. Holding to the branch and dragging Lazar, he waded a few feet to the bank. Lazar was unconscious but was revived.
