Leonard A. Theroux saved Keith A. Joly from burning, Glocester, Rhode Island, February 18, 1989. Joly, 26, was trapped inside his burning car, which had left the roadway and struck a tree on an embankment. Driving by, Theroux, 65, retired foreman, was alerted to the accident; he stopped and descended to Joly’s car, on which flames issued from the engine area and underside. Theroux forced down the window of the driver’s door, then leaned inside and freed Joly’s legs. With flames by then having entered the car and despite the intense heat, Theroux maneuvered Joly through the partially-opened door, which was wedged against another tree, and, with help from others who had arrived, carried him away before the car became engulfed in flame.
