Leonard Holdsworth rescued Anthony M. and Joshua R. Powell and Jennie R. Petty from burning, Lakemont, Pennsylvania, May 30, 1992. Anthony, 11; his brother Joshua, 7, and Jennie, 6, and her older sister were asleep in a bedroom of Jennie’s family’s mobile home when fire broke out in an addition to the living room. Driving near the scene, Holdsworth, 41, contract newspaper hauler, discovered the fire. Learning that children were inside the mobile home, Holdsworth entered through a window in the children’s bedroom and began to search for them in the intense heat and dense smoke, which obscured visibility. He located Anthony on the floor in that room, then took him to the window and handed him outside to others. He turned and searched for other children, finding Joshua and Jennie also on the floor, then taking them to the window for removal. Holdsworth himself then exited the burning mobile home. Arriving firefighters recovered Jennie’s sister, who could not be revived. Anthony, Joshua, and Jennie required hospitalization for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns. Holdsworth, given oxygen at the scene, sustained minor injury, from which he recovered.
