Leonard M. Elder, 39, salesman, died attempting to save Ralph B. Shugert, 10, from drowning, Indianapolis, Indiana, July 4,1911. Elder, a poor swimmer, and dressed, plunged into deep water to Ralph, who, unable to swim, was struggling in Fall Creek. Elder caught Ralph, and the latter grabbed him by the hair and climbed onto his shoulders, forcing Elder under the water. Elder held Ralph’s feet and made no effort to dislodge him, but by the time Ralph’s father reached him, Elder had released his hold. He did not come up after being forced under the surface and was drowned. Ralph was taken ashore by his father. 6881-523
