Leonard Potts attempted to save Donnie W. Stone from being struck by a bulldozer, Marietta, Georgia, March 27, 1970. At a landfill, Donnie, 11, ran into the path of a bulldozer which was pushing a pile of earth and trash ahead of it. Potts, 45, landfill supervisor, saw the situation and ran toward Donnie. He was within three feet of Donnie and had extended one hand toward him when the bulldozer veered slightly. As Donnie then ran to safety, Potts was knocked down onto the soft fill by the moving earth and trash and covered by it. At least one of the bulldozer’s wheels passed over his leg, which sustained an open fracture. Potts was aided from the dirt and removed to a hospital. He recovered.
