Leopold F. Arnold, Sr., saved Emmie B. Fincher from drowning, St. Simons Island, Georgia, August 14, 1912. Miss Fincher, 23, who could not swim, got into deep water while bathing in the Atlantic Ocean and was steadily carried farther from shore. Arnold, 27, fisherman, was attracted by shouts and ran 600 feet to the water. For several days he had not been well, and he was somewhat weak. He waded 75 feet and swam 125 feet, then he saw Miss Fincher a foot beneath the surface. She was unconscious. He grasped her hair and swam about 50 feet with her. A boat then reached him and Miss Fincher was taken to shore by it. Arnold was tired, and he clung to the boat until it reached wadable water. While men were helping him to shore, he fainted, and he was unconscious 10 minutes. Miss Fincher was revived in about an hour. 9007-1043
