LeRoy Aden rescued Christopher T. Phillips from assault, Skyland, North Carolina, February 11, 1990. Phillips, 23, a state highway patrolman, was questioning the driver of a car that he had just stopped, near a service station, when the driver fled on foot. Phillips chased and caught him, and a struggle ensued, during which the man took Phillips’s gun from its holster. Aden, 47, attendant at the service station, ran to aid Phillips. Seeing that the assailant had a gun, Aden approached from behind and grasped him around the neck, then locked both hands on the assailant’s gun hand. Aden pulled the assailant off Phillips, who then regained his footing and secured the gun, which the assailant had fired during the scuffle. Aden held onto the assailant while Phillips handcuffed him. During his struggle with the assailant, Aden sustained a bite to his right wrist, but he recovered.
