Leslie Wiltshire, 51, orchardist, saved Lloyd B. Macpherson, 11, from drowning, Avonport, Nova Scotia, July 19, 1924. Lloyd, who could not swim, was holding to the stump of a tree, which was drifting in the Avon River, and he was carried by a strong outgoing tide current more than 800 feet from the bank. Wiltshire, who was in very poor physical condition, swam 550 feet to Lloyd. He then swam with great effort 125 feet toward the bank, pushing the stump to which Lloyd still clung. A boat was brought to them by three men, and Loyd was lifted into it, but there was no room for Wiltshire. He held to the stern, and they were taken to the bank. Wiltshire had been in the water a half-hour and was exhausted. 24601-2036
