Lester H. Vinal, 15, student, saved Newman C. Morrill, 16, student, from drowning, Jefferson, Maine, June 25, 1915. Newman became distressed in Damariscotta Lake, 300 feet from shore, and Lester, a poor swimmer, swam to him from a point 10 feet away. He seized Newman but had difficulty in supporting him and called for help. He once lost his hold on Newman, and Newman sank, but Lester went under water and brought him to the surface again. A boy in a rowboat that was anchored 15 feet away brought it to Lester after much difficulty, and Newman was pulled into the boat, unconscious. He was revived on shore. Lester was chilled and weak when taken ashore. 14993-1276
