Lester Ray Armes helped to rescue Harry O. Oxford, Sr., from burning, San Jose, California, March 15, 1972. When his pickup truck was badly damaged in an accident and fire broke out at the engine and in a camper attached to the bed, Oxford, 44, was injured and rendered unconscious. The flames increased and spread; and ammunition carried in the camper was exploding as Armes, 37, heavy equipment operator, and a highway patrolman both ran to alongside the cab, in which the fire then was extensive. With an extinguisher the patrolman put out most of the flames on Oxford. Heat was intense as Armes and the patrolman reached into the cab; and each sustained minor burns as they pulled Oxford out. He recovered after hospitalization for injuries and extensive burns. 52676-6020
